The purpose of this article is to serve as a guide to how to get your sea legs and engage in what some consider as the most profitable activity in Medievia for making gold. The article will offer stages to work on in your quest to become the next big shipping star.
First things first. Shipping is costly if you dive straight in. Many have spent hundreds of millions learning the hard way from firsthand experience. If you're not the Bill Gates of Medievia, you might want to take a slightly less expensive route by learning from others. When someone is shipping, join them as a crew member and learn from basics. Learn to be a good crew member by doing and observing how others do and learn from their successes and their mistakes.
How to be a good crew member.
- Follow orders
- Help chum when asked or ask the ship captain first before you start chumming serpents. You'll need to have a few pieces of serpent meat in your inventory before you can chum (type 'ship chum') and do stop when you have a serpent bumping the ship unless told otherwise by your ship captain.
- Bring your own blubber hook (purchaseable from Harag's House of Hurt in Med City) and snag serpent meat whenever you can. Serpent meat can be identified by the light blue spots on the sea when you have ship map turned on. You can snag (type 'ship snag') when there's a light blue spot in a square adjacent to your ship and you are standing on the decks either on larboard or starboard gun side, or at stern gun position. You might as to spam a few times to succeed in the beginning as your % of success is lower when you don't have the serpent hunter or master hero tags.
- Help repair (type 'ship repair'), douse fires (type 'ship douse') or pump water (type 'ship pump') when needed. When all three are needed, dousing should be put on first priority as fires spread and can destroy rooms very quickly. Do note that your ship sinks when it takes 200 tons of water so listen to the shouts of the deckhand pumping party to see if they're reducing the water level and help if needed. Use 'ship stat' to see which part of the ship needs to be repaired and help accordingly. Damaged hull and storage results in more water being taken in so if the hull is damaged badly, it should be your first priority to restore all destroyed rooms to critical condition as soon as possible and then to medium subsequently. Damaged guns would mean that you'll have no protection vs serpents or khrait. Do note that destroyed guns don't fire and critical condition guns can only be manned by master deckhands (use 'job review' to check on the skill level of the deckhands on your ship), so if the ship is under attack, getting guns back up to medium condition is going to be a priority.
- When mob factions board the ship, follow the ship captain's orders and do not solo unless you know what you are doing.
- When dead, upon corpsing you will find yourself in Davy Jones' locker. Go west two times and type 'enter' at the Door of Atonement. You will end up in the wilderness near the ship. Patch up and get back to ship with 'ship goto <ship name>' to get back into the fray.
